The central question
A useful invention becomes a civilizational force when institutions can no longer function without it. The decisive signal is not the number of agents deployed. It is the transfer of a consequential decision: who can approve a payment, change a supply route or refuse a service without waiting for a person? The Observatory follows that transfer through institutions and ordinary lives.
A signal should be recorded with its date, original source, demonstrated capability and limits. A company announcement establishes what was announced; it does not establish adoption across an economy. Between a laboratory result and a change in political power lie deployment costs, infrastructure, organizational incentives and resistance. These intermediate steps are where a scenario earns its credibility.
Mechanism and consequences
Consider a hypothetical insurer that accepts only machine-readable contracts. Suppliers adopt agents to remain insurable. Buyers then delegate procurement because human negotiation becomes slower and more expensive. What began as a productivity tool becomes an entry condition for trade. The second-order consequence is a new gatekeeper: the organization that defines acceptable representation.
The counter-signal matters equally. Institutions may require human appeal, preserve competing protocols or provide an offline route. These arrangements can prevent dependence from becoming exclusion. Our question is therefore not simply whether automation grows, but whether the practical ability to refuse grows with it.
The boundary is the unit of analysis
A demonstration inside one organization can hide the difficult part: crossing into another organization with different incentives, records and authority. Follow the boundary. Can a capability survive a change of supplier, a disputed result, the departure of a participant or a revoked mandate? A successful task and a durable institution are different achievements.
What would change the scenario
Track the cost of switching, the time required to repair a failed commitment and who can authorize a stop. A system is becoming infrastructure when others design their own processes around its continued availability. Dependence is becoming power when those participants can no longer replace it on acceptable terms.
The observation record
Record the claim, the demonstrated result, the institutional boundary crossed and the unresolved dependency. Keep failure cases alongside successes. A pilot that requires a permanent human rescue team may reveal a useful service, but it points toward a different future from independently repeatable coordination.
